Gold Cup discussion:

Nick Luck, Mark Johnson and Eddie Freemantle were keen on Denman with Paul Ryan (Paddy Power Irish form guru) and Phil Smith the Handicapper in the Kauto camp. The Handicapper rated Kauto Star at 180, Exotic Dancer at 177, Denman 176 with a P for improving, but added that whoever wins will probably pass the 180 rating. Phil Smith summing up his bit by saying that Kauto was top rated and was therefore the best horse in the race. Eddie and Nick were very keen on Denman. When the handicapper said whatever horses Denman had beaten had never franked the form Eddie said that's because Denman destroys them, he runs them into the ground and gives them such hard races they take a long time to recover. He added that  if the the two jockeys don't spend the whole race looking and toying with each other, if it's a true run race, then Kauto will never get to use his speed because Denman will have emptied him too. For a professional punter who really does put his money where his mouth is it was a very strong endorsement.

When somebody (I think Mark raised it on behalf of a comment from the floor) mentioned that it was perhaps a race to savour rather than bet in, Nick Luck said "what rubbish - you must have a bet - it is going to be a race of a lifetime and one that your grandchildren will ask 'who did you back in the great Gold Cup of 08 grandad' " He then said what did we think happened when the Irish came over with Arkle? And putting on a great Irish accent 'I tink our hoss may beat yer man Mill House but I'm saving all me punts for the Pertemps final' Great fun.
